At every air base, beyond the military aircraft soaring through the skies, there is a quiet yet indispensable logistics support team on the ground. Staff Sergeant Lin Wei-An, assigned to the Facilities Squadron of the 5th Base Maintenance Group, 5th Tactical Composite Wing of the Air Force, is one of these unsung ground crew members. As an operator of various heavy vehicles and machinery, she works behind the scenes to ensure that aircraft can take off safely at every critical moment.

Originally from Yilan, Lin comes from an ordinary family. Her parents work in the private sector, her older siblings are engineers, and her younger brother serves in emergency medical services. Her decision to join the military was sparked shortly before graduating from high school, when senior students returned to share their experiences. Five Air Force and two Navy alumni gave talks at her school, and with additional guidance from instructors, she chose to embark on a military career, opening a very different path in life.

Unlike many service members who come from military-focused academic backgrounds, Lin studied architecture in high school and therefore selected an engineering-related military specialty. Although her assignment to the current unit was determined by a lottery system, she did not shy away from the challenge. Starting as an enlisted volunteer, she advanced to the non-commissioned officer ranks three years later through the enlisted-to-NCO promotion program, gaining improved pay and benefits. She is now in her sixth year of military service. Reflecting on her family’s reaction at the time, Lin recalls that her mother initially opposed the decision, concerned about the hardship of military life, while her father offered unwavering support.

Looking back on basic training, Lin describes her first live-fire exercise, first combat training, and first hand-grenade throw as pivotal moments of transformation. Despite initially lacking physical strength and having no driving experience, she progressed through the support of her fellow service members and the patient instruction of unit leaders. The military also provided free certification training, access to equipment, and practice facilities, enabling her to steadily build professional competence. Lin notes that skills which would require substantial tuition in civilian life are fully supported within the military, as long as one is willing to learn.

Currently serving as a driver in the Mechanical Section of the Maintenance Squadron, Lin has obtained certifications for forklifts, heavy loaders, and other equipment, laying an additional foundation for her future. Her daily duties begin with Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention, operating large runway sweepers to patrol the main runway. Using magnetic and suction systems, she removes debris and gravel that could potentially damage aircraft engines.

Beyond the early-morning routine, she also operates various machines to support units across the base—trimming trees, assisting with loading and unloading operations, and responding to urgent runway and taxiway repair tasks—to ensure aircraft can take off and land safely. Maintenance squadrons face heavy workloads and a constant demand for manpower, requiring new personnel to complete 13 weeks of specialized training and pass rigorous evaluations. The training emphasizes hands-on practice, building experience and professional skill through real operations. As the unit frequently operates high-risk equipment such as hydraulic vehicles, air-conditioning units, and large jacks, all tasks must strictly adhere to standard operating procedures, leaving no room for error.

Lin says that although she may be just a small cog in the military machine, every effort she makes contributes to the smooth functioning of the entire system. She has set a personal goal of serving 20 years in the military while continuing to earn additional professional certifications to strengthen her future prospects.

When asked about her reflections on military life, Lin smiles shyly and says that her service has brought significant growth both physically and mentally. In addition to a stable income, she has also met her life partner, breaking through previous self-imposed limitations. In her view, for young people who are still considering their future direction, joining the military is an option well worth serious consideration.
