Captain Lin Yu-Hsuan, Deputy Company Commander of the 2nd Company, 302nd Battalion, 795th Brigade, Air Defense and Missile Command, did not originally plan a military career. While studying physical education at Chinese Culture University, she initially envisioned a future in the sports industry. During her freshman year, however, discussions with military instructors and a realistic assessment of career prospects led her to reconsider. With limited long-term stability in most sports-related professions, she ultimately chose to join the ROTC Class of 2021, valuing the military’s structured career path and stable livelihood.

Among her classmates—and even across the entire department—she was the only one to make this choice. ROTC training significantly reshaped her university life, with weekends devoted to coursework and academic breaks spent at military academies. Years of intensive training fostered discipline, time management, and early adaptation to military life.

As the only daughter in her family, her decision initially met strong parental opposition, rooted in concern over military discipline and hardship. After persistent communication, her family gradually came to support her choice, providing crucial encouragement for her continued service.

Lin Yu-Hsuan began as a ground crew cadet, later transferring to flight training after being inspired by senior aviators. Physical limitations ultimately led her back to the ground service track, where she selected assignment to Ching Chuan Kang Air Base. Drawn to the teamwork-oriented nature of air defense units, she confidently joined an air defense artillery unit despite its demanding reputation.

Upon arrival, she served as a platoon leader, focusing on radar operations and coordination while working alongside experienced non-commissioned officers skilled in 35mm anti-aircraft guns and Sparrow missile systems. Facing the challenge of English-language radar interfaces and a steep learning curve, she emphasized trust-based leadership by participating directly in daily tasks. Within six months, she earned the recognition of her subordinates.

After approximately a year and a half, Lin Yu-Hsuan was promoted to Deputy Company Commander. In this role, she supports command decision-making by developing operational options and assessing factors such as terrain, equipment characteristics, timing, and risk during unit maneuvers.

Daily training within air defense units remains intense, encompassing emplacement drills, engagement procedures, manual tracking, and mobility operations. Repetition builds muscle memory to ensure effectiveness even under degraded conditions, such as radar or power loss. Rigorous evaluations, inspections, and maintenance routines sustain constant readiness.

As battlefield conditions evolve, her unit has integrated reconnaissance drones, with certified operators trained through Air Force and civil aviation programs. Counter-drone measures are also being tested, including protective systems evaluated through simulated UAV attacks, with findings reported to higher command.

Air defense missions require uninterrupted readiness, maintained through 24-hour duty rotations. Personnel remain on standby while continuing routine work, with leave scheduled in a shift-based system. Dedicated mess facilities ensure logistical support during irregular operations, and dormitory accommodations provide safe living conditions, with women comprising about one-fifth of the unit.

Although air defense units rarely attract public attention, recent conflicts have underscored their decisive role. Effective air defense protects critical infrastructure, preserves societal stability, and sustains combat effectiveness. Behind the radar screens, officers and soldiers like Captain Lin Yu-Hsuan quietly form an indispensable pillar of national defense.
