Honor Formations Under the Blazing Sun: National High School Honor Guard Finals

Under the blazing sun, the sound of synchronized footsteps and rifles cutting through the air echoed one after another in front of Liberty Square. The Ministry of National Defense’s 9th National Senior High School Honor Guard Competition Finals were held last Saturday, May 30, at the National Theater and Concert Hall Art Plaza in Taipei. Elite high school and vocational high school honor guard teams from across Taiwan gathered to compete for the highest honor through formation changes, rifle-drill techniques, and team coordination. After intense competition, Tainan’s private Kang Ming Senior High School once again stood out, successfully claiming its second consecutive championship and winning the school’s second national title. National Pingtung Girls’ Senior High School and Hsin Hsing High School took second and third place, respectively.

This year’s competition was held under the theme “Together for Honor Guard.” After preliminary contests in the northern, central, and southern regions, a total of nine high school and vocational high school teams advanced to the national finals. Competing under intense heat, the students presented the results of months, or even an entire year, of training in front of Liberty Square. From basic rifle-handling movements and rifle tosses to difficult formation transitions and group coordination, every movement reflected long hours of repeated practice and strict discipline.

The most eye-catching part of the event was undoubtedly the rifle-drill performances carried out by honor guard students from each school in coordination with the rhythm of the music. Rifles spun rapidly through the air before landing precisely back in the students’ hands, accompanied by synchronized movements and orderly footsteps. The performances demonstrated a high level of teamwork and psychological composure. Although honor guard competitions are essentially performance-based contests, their training shares many similarities with military training, including discipline, team coordination, standardized movements, and the ability to perform under pressure.

For many students, the honor guard is not simply a school club, but a culture of honor. From the moment they join the team, members must devote a large amount of after-school time to physical training, marching practice, and rifle-drill training. A rifle toss that appears to last only a few seconds often requires hundreds, or even thousands, of repetitions before it can meet competition standards. When all movements are integrated into the overall formation, the challenge becomes an even greater test of the entire team’s coordination and mutual trust.

This year’s champion, Kang Ming Senior High School, has in recent years become one of the strongest teams in Taiwan’s national honor guard competitions. After advancing from the southern regional preliminary contest to the finals, the team successfully defended its title. Judging from its on-site performance, Kang Ming demonstrated a highly mature level of overall rhythm control, movement consistency, and formation fluidity. In particular, during difficult rifle tosses and formation transitions, the team showed almost no obvious mistakes, earning strong recognition from the judges.

On the spirited stage of the National High School Honor Guard Finals, the invited Fu Jen Catholic University competitive cheerleading team injected a different kind of youthful energy into the event through high-difficulty lifts, tosses, tumbling, and precise formations. As one of Taiwan’s leading university competitive cheerleading teams, Fu Jen’s members have long devoted themselves to physical conditioning, technical training, and team coordination. With at least three practice sessions each week, the team has achieved outstanding results in domestic and international competitions and has represented Taiwan on the global stage multiple times. Their invitation to perform at the Ministry of National Defense’s high school honor guard finals not only showcased the strength, aesthetics, and discipline of competitive cheerleading, but also allowed the audience to see how young students in different team-based competitive activities share the same pursuit of honor, cooperation, and self-breakthrough.

In addition to the honor guard competition itself, this year’s event also continued to incorporate elements of All-Out Defense Education. The site featured interactive booths set up by the armed forces, including displays of the dual-seat Stinger missile system, introductions to various unmanned aerial vehicles, flight suit and diving suit try-ons, drone simulation operations, and shooting experiences. These activities allowed the public to engage with national defense affairs at close range. In recent years, due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions across the Taiwan Strait, drones, air defense missiles, and asymmetric warfare capabilities have become major areas of public interest. As a result, drone-related displays and interactive areas became one of the highlights of the event.

In recent years, the National High School and Vocational High School Honor Guard Competition has developed into one of Taiwan’s most representative student honor guard events. From its early years, when only a small number of schools participated, the competition has grown to include 45 schools and more than 1,100 student participants this year. This reflects the continued expansion of honor guard culture on campuses. For many students, joining an honor guard not only cultivates responsibility and discipline, but also provides an opportunity to learn leadership, cooperation, and self-discipline through team life.

Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo watched the entire competition and personally presented trophies and pennants to the winning teams after the event, recognizing the students’ efforts and performance under high-temperature conditions. When the champion team, Kang Ming Senior High School, received the championship trophy, applause and cheers filled the venue, bringing this year’s competition to its climax.

With the conclusion of the finals, the 9th National Senior High School Honor Guard Competition officially came to an end. Yet for the students who stood on the stage, this was not merely a competition, but a snapshot of their youth. Every rifle toss, every catch, and every synchronized step carried the weight of countless hours of practice and sweat. Through their efforts, the honor guard culture that symbolizes honor, discipline, and team spirit continues to be passed down among a new generation. For the Ministry of National Defense, the honor guard competition is no longer just a contest; it is gradually becoming an important platform for promoting All-Out Defense Education.
