ROC Army Marks 80th Anniversary with New Capabilities, Electronic Warfare Systems, and Modernized Combat Power

The Republic of China (ROC) Army Command Headquarters celebrated its 80th anniversary last Friday (May 29) at Dahan Camp under the theme “Army 80: Innovation and Transformation.” Through a military parade, dynamic ground-and-air demonstrations, and displays of newly fielded equipment, the event showcased the Army’s recent achievements in force modernization, combat readiness, and defense transformation.

The anniversary celebration drew former Commanding Generals and Army Commanders, senior officers from major Army units, local community leaders, school principals, and members of the public. The Army noted that preparations for the anniversary began late last year and included a military concert, community fair, sports competitions, ceremonial drill contests, and local partnership programs designed to strengthen ties with the Longtan community.

Among the highlights were performances by the Army Academy Drum Team and the Special Operations Command demonstration unit. While familiar to many visitors, this year’s demonstration introduced modern rifle-based close-quarters combat techniques that emphasize defensive and counterattack movements using the rifle’s barrel, receiver, and stock, reflecting the Army’s continued evolution in combat training.

The military parade featured many of the ROC Army’s most advanced operational systems, including HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, M1A2T Abrams tanks, CM34 Clouded Leopard armored vehicles, Sky Sword II surface-to-air missile launchers, TOW 2B missile carriers, Avenger air defense systems, special operations assault vehicles, Thunderbolt-2000 rocket launchers, tactical drones, target acquisition UAVs, and—most notably—the first public appearance of a tactical communications jamming vehicle, signals intelligence reconnaissance vehicle, and the third-generation field information and communications system.

Static displays also included newly painted AH-64E Apache and UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, interactive exhibits, and shooting simulators, creating a family-friendly atmosphere while allowing visitors to engage directly with military technology.

Particularly significant was the debut of the Army’s new electronic warfare (EW) systems. Lessons from the Russia-Ukraine War have demonstrated that electronic warfare extends far beyond disrupting enemy communications. Modern battlefields are dominated by a dense electromagnetic environment filled with radios, data links, drone control signals, satellite navigation systems, and radar emissions.

Before a signal can be jammed, it must first be detected. According to Army personnel at the event, the reconnaissance vehicle is capable of detecting electromagnetic emissions within a radius of approximately 50 kilometers. Using broadband receiving antennas and advanced signal-processing equipment, operators can identify signal frequencies, transmission directions, signal strength, modulation methods, and probable functions. By networking multiple reconnaissance vehicles together, operators can accurately locate signal sources, allowing commanders to identify command posts, radar sites, drone operators, and communications nodes.

Once detected, jamming operations can be tailored to mission requirements. Basic suppression jamming overwhelms enemy frequencies with noise, while more sophisticated techniques target specific control links, video transmission channels, or satellite navigation signals. Deception jamming can even feed false information to adversary systems, causing misidentification or navigation errors. Army officials indicated that current doctrine emphasizes targeted, time-limited jamming because powerful emitters can quickly reveal their own positions and become targets themselves.

The dynamic demonstration featured Special Operations troops fast-roping from UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to secure a landing zone before CH-47 Chinook helicopters inserted assault vehicles. A drone demonstration highlighted the growing importance of FPV drones, offering spectators a glimpse of the challenges modern infantry face against rapidly maneuvering unmanned systems.

Army Commander General Lu Kun-Hsiu emphasized that the anniversary was not only a celebration of the Army’s history but also a demonstration of its future. He thanked former commanders for laying the foundation for modernization efforts and stressed that every newly acquired system represents years of planning and commitment.

Concluding the event, the Army reaffirmed its mission to defend the Republic of China and safeguard the people of Taiwan. The 80th anniversary celebration served as both a reflection on decades of service and a clear demonstration of the Army’s commitment to strengthening combat readiness, resilience, and national defense capabilities for the future.
